Friday 29 January 2010

The 2010 Apple Press Conference is over. And now 99% of everything written about the iTabl ... errr ... iPad in the past few months is obsolete.

Steve Jobs was rumored to say that the iPad would be “the most important thing I’ve ever done.“ But I can’t help thinking that it’s already been done. By Steve Jobs. Three years ago.

I love Apple, but I’m not drinking the Kool-Aid yet. Here are some things about the tablet that I find less than stellar.

NOTE: Details are still being updated. Let me know if you hear of any new specs I should report on.

No new interface

The internet was buzzing when tech blogs uncovered an Apple patent filing for a proximity-sensing touch screen. That’s where the screen can detect your finger even if it hovers over the display. There was even talk about pressure sensitivity (mostly gleaned from the paint splatters Apple used in the press invites). Sure, there’s some really slick new menus; and they really do look clean and usable. But in the end, you’re still just smearing your greasy fingers on a giant glass screen. Just like the iPhone. Try wiping that giant thing on your shirt sleeve.

Still no multitasking

That means you can only have one app open at a time. Will I be able to check my email while watching a movie? Or check Google Maps in the middle of a book?

$30 for the AT&T unlimited 3G

Aside from dropping the contract, $30 a month for unlimited 3G is exactly what iPhone users are already paying. Which is great, but why did they make such a big deal about it? Will I be able to use that same plan for both devices, or will it cost me another $30? And let’s not forget, AT&T has been coming under some serious fire for not being able to support the increasing demands the iPhone is already putting on their 3G network.

10 hours of battery life

10 hours is great for things like watching movies or surfing the web. But they’re putting so much emphasis on the device as an e-book reader - and Amazon’s Kindle runs for up to a week.

No camera

Not only do I feel they’re missing a huge interactivity point here - especially with the popularity of Skype - but even the iPod Nano comes with a camera!

No Flash. Still.

How can we expect to have a laptop-grade surfing experience without Flash? You had an excuse on the iPod Touch/iPhone, but doesn’t this amazing new chipset have the horsepower to make it happen? What’s the deal?

Native iPhone apps look ridiculous

The fact that current iPhone apps work on the iPad is both admirable and ridiculous at the same time. You can zoom the apps via pixel doubling, but did you see how giant the text looked on the Facebook app? I’m sure that there will be some amazing native apps down the line, though.

Keyboard dock

Sure, it’s an optional accessory. But isn’t a keyboard dock going against everything the tablet stands for? What about the amazing, responsive on-screen keyboard? Doesn’t this dock just turn it into a sub-par iMac?

$829 for the good one

Face it, you want the 3G. And since there’s so much emphasis on HD movies and games, you’re going to need lots of storage. $829 can nab you a really decent PC laptop, or even a nice gently-used MacBook.

Still no physical controls for games

The biggest complaint about Apple touting the iPod/iPhone as a gaming device is its lack of physical buttons. Developers have tried to skirt this issue with virtual buttons on the screen, but the lack of tactile feedback has frustrated many. There’s nothing here so far to remedy this aside from extra screen real estate.

What do you think about the new Apple iPad? Anything missing? Did it meet or exceed your expectations?

There are a number of reliable programs that will either recycle, or refurbish for class, charity, or third world use. Our society is WAY too disposable! Just think of the mountains of stuff we are throwing away every due to companies wanting to keep consumer spending going by giving items a short 'shelf life.'
I am curious what most people do with older computers, do you hold on to it? Do you recycle it? Do you merely toss it in the trash? Do you re-use the parts in new computers if possible? Im looking for atleast 5 answers and as many comments as people are willing to write. Thanks!

instant messaging

What's your experience with instant messaging? Do you like it? Do you do it a lot? Do you hate it, and refuse to do it at all? How would you compare it to email? How does it change the way you write?

I've found myself using various IM services a lot over the last year, and it has it's own style, which I'm not sure I like. I seem to use these truncated sentences, as if I'm speaking in breaths. I guess it's more efficient, but it seems so choppy. And of course there are all the acronyms you use to save time.

What do you think?
